A day out at : Castle Drogo in Devon

Luckily the weather let me travel back down to rainy Devon this weekend (although the train took twice as long!) as my grandma & granddad have come down from Lincolnshire to visit. Yesterday we decided to do a bit of sightseeing and visited Castle Drogo.

Castle Drogo was built in the 1910s & 20s to be the family home of rich business man Julius Drewe and was the last castle to be built in England. As it was built with the new materials of the time the flat roof never withstood the rain and it has always leaked... it currently resembles a giant mass of scaffolding as it is undergoing huge refurbishments.

If that kind of thing interests you there is a documentary on Channel 4 tonight; 'The Edwardian Grand Designer' which goes behind the scenes of the renovation at Castle Drogo and finds out about the life and work of the architect Edward Lutyens.

There were lots of cool things in the castle; a beautiful painting of Lady Frances, a fantastic golden electric tea-cup warmer and a letter clip that I would quite like to own... however our tour was less than enlightening as our guide was pretty grumpy! After the tour we went to the lovely cafe and my mum had a cream tea whilst my grandma and I had cheese scones and gigantic hot chocolates.

I'm back off to Bristol today, unfortunately on the bus as the train isn't running! What did you get up to this weekend?

  1. These are lovely photos too bad about the grumpy tour guide, that must have been annoying. The tea and scones look so yummy!
