instaupdate #8

bumper instaupdate today as I haven't done one for the whole of December! You might notice some of my photos are edited diiferently, with pretty text and stuff, that's because I finally got the A Beautiful Mess app. I also got another app this month called Afterlight, which has some really lovely filters and you can use it to make your pics circular etc. Have any of you got any apps you would recommend?
My December highlights:

  • I went to see the wonderful Lewis Watson again at Thekla as he is an old friend of my friend Jack, go check him out.
  • I did my first Christmas fair! It was at uni and nobody was there so I sold nothing. BUT it was good practice & now I make scrunchies!
  • I went to the Bath Xmas blogger meet! This will have its own post soon, I've been putting it off because I was nattering too much on the day and hardly took any pictures!
  • I went on a few good nights out including a night in 'All Hallows Hall', an old church in Easton, which was such a cool venue.
  • I went back to Devon for Christmas and was lucky to receive loads of lovely Christmas presents but unfortunately also a not so lovely Christmas cold.
  • I ATE. A LOT. I made some scrummy homemade carrot and coriander soup and some surprisingly delicious beetroot and goats cheese risotto. I also got an amazing hamper from my mum full of yummy food for uni. And over christmas I ate my weight in brie.
What have you done this December? Are you excited for the New Year!?

project : Brandon Flowers style jacket with feather epaulettes

Brandon Flowers, feather jacket, blazer, feather epaulettes,
Here's some photos of a fun commission I did last week. My friend wanted to give his brother a more personal present for Christmas this year and as his brother is a big Killers fan he thought he would get him a Brandon Flowers style feather jacket. He bought a load of feathers as well as a beautiful dinner jacket from Asos and I helped, with the help of my trusty glue gun, to put it all together for him. What do you think?

pink & sparkling for christmas & new year!

Rosy winter party wear

Just a quick little wishlist post of the things I want to be wearing this winter party season. I have a couple of Christmas parties lined up but I'm still not sure what I am doing for New Years Eve yet. I will, however, be going to the New Years' Day party at Motion in Bristol! Have you got any fun plans?

home : Vanessa Conyers Fairytale Ceramics

When I was at Larmer Tree festival this summer Vanessa had a stall in the artist's market and she swapped one of her beautiful handmade ceramic bowls for a headdress that I made (I think I got a pretty good deal!).

If fairies had tea-parties they would get their crockery from Vanessa. My bowl is from the Secret Garden collection and features whimsical woodland creatures with Alice in Wonderland-esque out of proportion flowers on the inside, a lace pattern on the outside and beautiful delicate gold edging. I love it so much so it is purely a decorative piece in my home as I'm far too clumsy. However Vanessa's work can be used practically; imagine having a whole dinner set!

eat : wagamama's winter collection

Yasai Katsu Curry, wagamama, exeter, princesshay, wok fried greens, japanese
My yasai katsu curry with some wok fried greens and Milly tucking in!

As I mentioned in my post about the Princesshay late night shopping event, which I attended a couple of weeks ago, one of my highlights of the night was being treated to a scrummy meal at Wagamama!  It was the perfect opportunity to meet the other bloggers and to sample Wagamama's new winter menu.

First up we all tried the beetroot, carrot and orange 'root juice' which is the new addition to their juice collection and surprisingly tasty. I like beetroot in things like soup but with the orange in this smoothie it was surprisingly refreshing and zesty... and really pretty colours! Beetroot is also really healthy and an amazing source of antioxidants.

I'm a vegetarian and I usually go for the noodle dish 'Yasai Yaki Soba' but I wanted to try something different so I went for a more winter friendly warming curry dish; 'Yasai Katsu Curry'. It features breadcrumbed slices of aubergine, butternut squash and sweet potato. I also had one of the new side dishes 'wok fried greens' which was broccoli and bok choi stir fried in soy sauce and garlic. I tried very hard to eat everything with chopsticks but had to give up quite quickly, it was still as scrummy with a fork though!

Have you been out anywhere to eat lately?

moodboard & mixtape : the most wonderful time of the year

I went to the Bath Christmas blogger meet on Saturday which really highlighted the fact that there's only a couple of weeks until Christmas! I have definitely not done all (or any) of my christmas shopping and it still feels like it should be September... aaaaah!

So today, in honour of being a third of the way through my advent calendar, my moodboard is in  festive colours and it also serves as a sort of Christmas wish list (hi mum!)! The 'mixtape' this time is obviously a list of my favourite Christmas tunes, which took me an embarrassingly short time to compile, enjoy!
01. 'White Christmas' - Michael Buble & Shania Twain (cover)
02. 'The Power of Love' - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
03. 'Its the Most Wonderful Time of the Year' - Andy Williams
03. 'Carol of the Bells' - Pentatonix (cover)
05. 'Fairytale of New York' - The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl
06. '8 Days of Christmas' - Destiny's Child
07. 'Christmas Wrapping' - The Waitresses
What Christmassy activities have you all been getting up to? You can see other moodboard & mixtape posts here.

event : late night christmas shopping at princesshay

Last Thursday I went back to Exeter for 'Light Up your Style' which was Princesshay's late night Christmas shopping launch event. Princesshay is a gorgeous shopping area so the event worked really well there and it was nice to come back my home city briefly!

I planned to meet up with Milly from A Sensible Heart and also got to meet Albertine from Dippy Writes and Jodie from A la Jode for the first time. We started the evening at Wagamama where we were treated to a meal (more about that soon!!) and also a little goody bag. We then proceeded to go and indulge ourselves in hot winter pimms and churros as well as exploring the evening events, which included competitions to win outfits and roaming models in outfits from some of the stores.
Left to Right:
Hannah in Primark coat and scarf and her own customised DMs.
Jessica in Jones boots, Wallace coat and her mum's scarf.
Katie with a New Look back and River Island shoes.
Russel with trousers from the Officer's Club and River Island shoes.

We were also official 'style spotters' for the evening and took a few snaps of people wandering about and looking stylish which was fun :) Princesshay will be open until 9 pm every Thursday until the 19th of December for all of your Christmas shopping needs and there will even be carol singers on the 12th!!

eat : pieminister FREE pie night for #cattledrive

Pieminister, Stokes Croft, Bristol, restaurant
I posted last year about visiting Pieminister's shop in St Nicholas's market with my parents but last Tuesday me and my flatmate went to their fancier more restaurant style shop in Stokes Croft for the 'Free Pie' event which was part of Cattle Drive; Pieminister's fundraising campaign for Send a Cow. They are aiming to raise £40,000 and help to kick start 30 farms in Africa.

Hiedi Pie, mash, gravy, pieminister

We were lucky to get there at prime queuing time and only had to wait for ten minutes despite the fact that over 300 people attended the event! We also ended up donating pretty much the full price of our pie anyway so I think the fundraising concept was pretty successful too.

I chose the Heidi Pie (my all time fave) which is goats' cheese, sweet potato, spinach and red onion. Drooool. Jess had the Free Ranger Pie which consists of "free range British chicken and outdoor reared ham hock with leek and west country cheddar".

You can find out where you can sample these pies here or how to get involved in the campaign here.

project: easy business card d.i.y

I'm selling headdresses and other little bits and bobs with my flat mate at a Christmas fair on my uni campus this afternoon and as most of the orders I get in tend to be custom orders I really needed to have some business cards with me. Unfortunately I ran of the business cards I got from Moo.com and needed some new ones urgently. So armed with a pack of plain business cards I hand wrote my addresses on the back and jazzed up the front by just pritt sticking colourful magazine paper on them! I think they're quite nice for a very quick job.

I've also complied a pinterest board of amazing beautiful business card ideas that I want to make when  I get a bit more time.

Can't wait to show you some pictures from the fair! Fingers crossed we sell something....

Temple Meads train station | Bath in Fashion launch | Boris the campus cat
Robin | Pink headdress | Quote
Cattle Drive | Westworld | Exeter Christmas shopping

So I've had another busy few weeks! I should do these round-ups more often!
  • The Monday before last I travelled across to Bath to visit my friend Katy and to go to the launch of Bath in Fashion bright and early on the Tuesday morning. 8.30 am was a truly hideous hour for my student body clock but luckily we were treated to really yummy pastries and bucks fizz which perked me up a bit! I met one of my favourite bloggers, Megan from the Briar Rose Blog, who is hosting the #BathXmasMeet this Saturday  and also Sophie the brains behind the floral headdress enterprise Crown and Glory. We learnt about the wide range of events going on in Bath this year... I am most excited about the talk with Meadham Kirchoff which sounds like its going to be amazing.
  • I also visited the lovely city of Winchester to see my family, you can read about it here.
  • Me and my flatmate Jess went to Pieminister in Stokes Croft to enjoy some free pie (well we donated anyway) which I will post more about soon.
  • I got to see the issue of Westworld that I edited in its print version: exciting!
  • Aaaaaaand I went to another blogger event with Milly from A Sensible Heart, this time in Exeter's shopping centre Princesshay, for their late night christmas shopping. More about that soon too.

You can see previous instagram updates here or just follow me on instagram! How have your last few weeks been? Please send me your instagram links!
